This year again the European Commission is holding a competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism to promote the development of smart solutions and tourism sustainability in the EU, and those interested from all member states can apply until October 20.

Innovative, smart and sustainable solutions in tourism are the focus of the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism and for the European Destination of Excellence (EDEN).

The European Commission launched the first competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2018, with 38 cities from 19 EU member states vying for the 2019 European Capital of Smart Tourism title.

In addition to the European Capital of Smart Tourism title, examples of best practices are selected and presented in four categories: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalisation, and Cultural Heritage and Creativity.

According to the website of the competition, Croatian destinations and experts have so far not been involved in the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism. However, Croatian destinations have regularly participated in the EDEN competition for over 10 years and achieved good results.

The new 2021 competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism is worth €2 million (HRK 15 million).

"The general aim of the project and the competition is to support European destinations and cities in their transformation to smart and sustainable solutions, giving winners visibility and possibility to achieve greater success in tourism, as well as for the destinations taking part in the competition to share the best practices, learn from each other, network and create opportunities for cooperation," the Ministry of Tourism and Sports said. (Hina)
