Project to revitalise Kopacki Rit nature park presented

Considering its resources and potential, Kopacki Rit Nature Park has a central place in Osijek-Baranja County's tourism strategy and in the period ahead, the park's historical, cultural and natural heritage will be revitalised after it was devastated in the 1991-1995 Homeland War, the park's director and county officials said recently.

The park's director, Tomislav Bogdanovic, told a press conference that one of the project's strategic objectives was to clear the Danube river basin of land mines and revitalise the Naturavita forests eco-systems.

The completion of the project of mine removal in an area of 200 hectares will significantly improve the safety of visitors and the park's employees.

He added that the project also involved the reconstruction of Tikves Castle which would be turned into a multi-media information centre that would present the park's historical heritage and natural values.

The director of the Agency for the Management of Protected Natural Values, Davor Mikulic, said that the agency was also involved in the EcoWet project as part of the cross-border cooperation programme Interreg Croatia-Serbia, valued at 355,000 euros and aimed at raising awareness of the significance of protecting wetlands.

There are also plans to revitalise Mali Sakadas Pond in the Kopacki Rit nature park.
