A project promoting Topusko as a smart thermal city, which is being funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, was presented on Wednesday in that town, 60 kilometres south of Zagreb. The project intends to make greater use of geothermal resources in the area.

Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are financing the project within the European Economic Area's 2014-2021 financial mechanism, setting aside €604,000 for that purpose. Croatia has granted €421,000 within the "Energy and Climate Change" programme, the total value of which is €20 million.

Topusko is a unique example in Croatia where the whole spa complex and public buildings such as the town administration offices, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a church and some apartment blocks are heated on geothermal power.

Sisak-Moslavina County Prefect Ivan Celjak said today that currently, new projects, worth about eight million euros are being implemented in Topusko.
