Seven Croatian food producers are exhibiting their products at the Biofach organic food trade fair in the German city of Nuremberg from 12 to 15 February, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK) said on Wednesday.

"Croatia has a great potential for further organic food production growth. The increasing demand on the domestic and EU markets and growing tourist consumption are opening up new possibilities to increase organic production in crop production, cattle breeding and processing," said the HGK vice-president for agriculture and tourism, Dragan Kovacevic.

The seven Croatian exhibitors - organic food producers and manufacturers of machinery and equipment for the food industry - are Bogadi, Galleria Internazionale, Herbas, Jan Spider, PIP, Vegeteriana and Zlatna Soltanka. The products they are exhibiting are of a higher or high degree of processing, including fruit and vegetables, cereals, oilseeds, olives, industrial and medicinal plants, and honey.

In the European Union, the land area under organic production has increased by 70 percent in the last ten years. The share of the retail value of organic production in the total retail value of food products in the EU is estimated at five percent and is growing, the HGK said in a statement.

Although organic food producers generate lower yields than conventional agricultural producers, their products fetch up to 150 percent higher prices than conventional products. This, along with EU operating aid and aid for capital investment, is a magnet that attracts a growing number of primary agricultural producers to join the organic production certification system, the statement said.

Biofach is the world's leading trade fair for organic food where 3,500 exhibitors from 111 countries are showcasing their products.
