In the period from January to the end of May 2021 Croatia saw more than a million tourist arrivals and 3.9 million overnight stays, which is a year-on-year increase of 42% in the number of arrivals and a 38% increase in overnight stays, the Croatian Tourism Board (HTZ) said on Tuesday.

Foreign visitors accounted for more than 516,000 arrivals and 2.5 million overnight stays, show data from the eVisitor system.

In May alone, there were 451,000 arrivals and 1.9 million overnight stays, a year-on-year increase of 412% in arrivals and of 256% in overnight stays. Foreign guests accounted for 312,000 arrivals and more than 1.5 million overnight stays, the HTZ said, noting that the tourist figures so far showed that Croatia was recognised in many markets as a safe, quality and well-prepared destination.

In the first five months of the year, Istria was the leading region in terms of the number of arrivals, followed by Kvarner and Split-Dalmatia and Zadar counties.

Continental destinations, including Zagreb, saw more than 712,000 overnight stays in the first five months.

The largest number of overnights stays was generated by Germans, Slovenians, Austrians, nationals of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poles.
