Tourism and Sport Minister Nikolina Brnjac said at the opening of Careers Week at University North in Varaždin on Monday that it was important to connect the business and academic communities, and that this university was a good example of such interaction.

"Without interaction of the corporate sector and the labour market with the academic community we cannot have a successful development of human resources. I am pleased to see that University North is one of the leaders in this regard because this university is being attended by 5,200 students," the minister said.

She said that her ministry had allocated €1.3 million under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for 10 new education programmes to help the labour market in cooperation with industry.

University North is a STEM university which has a tourism programme aimed at developing tourism in northern Croatia, Rector Mario Milković said. He noted that nearly 1,000 students are recipients of scholarships from the business community and local government.

Varaždin County 3rd strongest economy in Croatia

Varaždin County Prefect Anđelko Stričak said that this county has a population of about 160,000, nearly 70,000 jobs, 16,000 economic operators and about 4,500 foreign workers.

"We are the third strongest economy in Croatia, with an average unemployment rate of around 3%. These figures show best how important the economy is to us and how much attention we dedicate to it," Stričak said.
