Significantly increased tourist numbers in first four months and in April

In the first four months of 2022, 1.5 million tourists stayed in commercial accommodation, generating 4.4 million bed nights, up 184% and 190% respectively year on year, mostly due to an increase in arrivals and bed nights of 279% in April, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

In the first four months of this year, there was one million more arrivals and almost 3 million more overnight stays compared with the same period in 2021.

There were 524,000 domestic tourists and they generated 1.2 million bed nights, which is 43.8% and 46% more respectively year on year.

Significant increases were registered in the number of foreign tourists, with just over one million arrivals in the first four months, which is an increase of 468.7% on the year, and almost 3.3 million overnight stays, an increase of 448%.

The most common foreign tourists generating overnight stays in commercial accommodation in those four months were Germans, Slovenes, Austrians and tourists from the UK, Italy and the USA.

In April alone, 832,700 or 279.1% more tourists arrived in commercial accommodation than in the same month last year, while 2.5 million overnight stays was an increase of 278%.

There were 191,000 or 57.3% more domestic tourists in April, generating 428,000 or 57.2% more bed nights.

Foreign tourists accounted for 642,000 arrivals, 553% more than in April 2021, generating 2.1 million overnight stays, up 430% year on year.

The highest number of foreign overnight stays in April, or 21% of the total, was recorded by tourists from Germany, followed by Slovenes and tourists from Austria, the UK, Italy, France and the USA. All generated more arrivals and nights than in April 2021.

According to the type of commercial accommodation, most overnight stays in April were in hotels, 1.3 million or 51% of the total, which is almost four times more hotel overnight stays than in April 2021.

Of the total overnight stays, 30.7% were generated in resorts and similar facilities for short breaks, and 18.3% were in camps. All these facilities recorded a higher tourist turnover compared to last year.
