The Vukovar water tower - a symbol of Croatian unity - was awarded the "Plautilla" international cultural and tourism award, Vukovar City authorities reported on Monday.

The prize was awarded by the Tourist Board of Solin, the Hotel President Solin and the City of Solin, based on a proposal by the Vukovar City Tourist Board, as part of the 9th International Congress of Historical Cities.

The award is given for the best project of restoration and valorisation of cultural and historical heritage in the category Historical city/locality/institution.

Since its opening on 30 October 2020, 210,128 visitors have visited the Vukovar water tower, and of them, 111,133 visited last year alone. It was also a venue for many events and the content it has to offer to visitors is expanding every year, according to Vukovar City authorities.

The tower contributes greatly to Vukovar, its development, attractiveness and tourism, and the "Plautilla" award is another excellent indicator that its restoration was the right decision.

The renovated Vukovar Water Tower was inaugurated in late October 2020. Reconstruction lasted three and a half years and cost HRK 46 million. It is a memorial to the suffering of Vukovar and its people in 1991 during the aggression by the Yugoslav People's Army and Serb paramilitaries.

Last year, the Franciscan Monastery in Vukovar received this award for the Franciscan Museum Vukovar project.

The International Congress of Historical Cities is a project organised by the Tourist Board of Solin, Hotel President Solin and the City of Solin.

This is the first such project in Croatia under the motto "Meet, share & build," the purpose of which is to encourage meetings between leaders in tourism and archeology of historical cities, to exchange experiences in their promotion on the domestic and international tourist market, and to jointly develop new tourist products and arrangements.
