The Ministry of Tourism has earmarked HRK 427,700 to support 13 tourism projects in secondary vocational and art schools with the aim of promoting vocational careers, improving the quality of staff and training for tourism and hospitality occupations, the ministry said on Monday. The ministry has earmarked the grants following a tender which is part of a programme promoting and strengthening competencies of vocational occupations in tourism, which was launched in 2009 and as part of which the ministry has granted almost HRK 4 million for various projects in secondary vocational schools.

Tourism Minister Gari Cappelli underscored that this year's selection process was aimed at motivating young people to adopt new skills and practical knowledge while still in school and to develop an entrepreneurial spirit.

"One of the objectives of this government is to transform the education system and adapt it to contemporary needs and trends in the business world. With this programme we wish to raise awareness of tourism as a horizontal industry and underline the importance of connecting it with other industries," the minister said, adding that he believed that the experience young people gain through the project will inspire them and motivate them to create new ideas and participate in developing Croatia's tourism.

Grants were awarded this year to projects that promote new tourism products that strengthen the overall competitiveness of the destination where the school applying for grants is located and that are based on connecting the public, civil and private sectors and science (development), positive effects on environment protection, introduction of new technologies and inclusion of strategically defined special forms of tourism (nautical, health, cultural, business, golf, cycling, rural and mountain, wine and food, youth, social, and the like). (Hina)
