Minister announces 670 mln euro investments in tourism

Croatia this year should have investments of 670 million euros in tourism, Minister Anton Kliman said on Monday visiting the Lanterna Camp in Istria, where the Valamar Riviera company is investing HRK 86 million, and the Hotel Amarin in Rovinj, which is being built by the Maistra company. "Investments this year in the tourism sector are planned at 670 million euros or 35% more than last year," Kliman said. He said that he was especially pleased with investments in the hotel sector because the Tourism Ministry was aiming to increase the share of hotel accommodation to reach at least 18% by 2020. He added that it was vital to raise the quality of camping grounds.

The Lanterna Camp is a member of the Leading Camping Europe association and has received several awards for quality, and the investment planned for the camp is the largest in this segment planned for this year, CEO of Valamar Riviera Zeljko Kukurin said.

"Converting camps into modern camping resorts of a higher quality aimed at attracting better paying guests is one of the key prospects of Croatian tourism growth and development," Kukurin said, adding that Valamar planned to invest a total of HRK 262 million this year along the entire Adriatic coast.

Minister Kliman also visited the Amarin Hotel which is a greenfield investment and is being built from scratch on the site the former Valdaliso hotel. The Maistra company plans to invest HRK 300 million in the hotel that will cater for 550 guests in 280 units.

Maistra's CEO Tomislav Popovic explained that the company intended to invest an additional HRK 1.6 billion over the next two years to upgrade 95% of its hotel capacities to four and five stars.
