The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) is one of the 47 recipients of the European Citizen's Prize for 2015, awarded by the European Parliament (EP), the European Parliament Representation in Zagreb said on Friday.

Since 2008, the European Parliament has awarded the European Citizen's Prize in recognition of outstanding achievements in promoting mutual understanding, strengthening ties between citizens of member states or facilitating cross-border or transnational cooperation within the European Union.

The recipients will be presented with medals in their respective countries, after which they will be invited to a ceremony in Brussels on October 14-15.

The HGSS, established in 1950 as an internal service of the Croatian Mountaineering Association, has evolved into a public service that takes care of people's safety on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year. It is a non-profit organisation consisting of about 800 members, volunteers organised in 24 stations, and it also takes part in cross-border rescue operations.
