A forum on tourism's strategic priorities was held on Thursday during Croatian Tourism Days in the northern coastal town of Rovinj, bringing together more than 500 participants.

The event was organised by the Tourism Ministry, the Chamber of Commerce (HGK), the national broadcaster (HRT) and the Zagreb-based institute for tourism.

Emphasising that the sustainable development of tourist trade was closely linked with its competitiveness, Tourism Minister Damir Bajs said Croatia had improved its position on a tourism competitiveness list which covered 133 countries in 2009.

Last year, Croatia shifted upward four places to rank 34th, leaving behind Israel, Tunisia and some other countries, he said.

The minister said that Croatia should now be ready for challenges stemming from the country's prospective admission to the European Union.

Croatia should retain and possibly increase its share in the European tourism market. Last year, Croatia's share was slightly over two percent, which meant that every 50th tourist in Europe visited Croatia, Bajs explained. (Hina)
