Some 475,000 tourists stayed in non-commercial accommodation in Croatia in 2022 and generated 10.3 million overnight stays, which is an increase of 2% both in arrivals and in overnight stays compared with 2021, according to the the national statistical office (DZS).

The data comes from the eVistor system of the Croatian Tourist Board and relates to the owners of holiday homes which they use for themselves, their relatives and friends. The owners are required to register all persons staying in their property in the eVisitor system.

Foreign visitors accounted for 77.2% of arrivals and 57.1% of overnight stays in non-commercial accommodation in 2022. A total of 367,000 foreign visitors were registered in the eVisitor system and they generated 6 million overnight stays, which are increases of 4.0% and 5.2% respectively compared with 2021.

The number of domestic tourists registered in the eVisitor system was 108,000, nearly 5% fewer than in 2021, and they spent 4.3 million nights in non-commercial accommodation, the largest number among all nations staying in such accommodation, but 2.5% down from the previous year.

Among the foreign visitors, Slovenians generated 2.4 million overnight stays (40.6%), followed by visitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina with 757,000 overnight stays, Germans (684,000), Serbians (453,000) and Austrians (258,000). About 20% of overnight stays were generated by tourists from other countries.

Zadar County topped the ranking with the largest number of overnight stays in non-commercial accommodation in 2022 (4 million, or 38.3% of all overnight stays). It was followed by Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (2.5 million, or 24.4%), and Istria County (1.4 million, or 13.6%).

In continental Croatia, the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County each registered about 5,000 overnight stays in non-commercial accommodation, while all other continental counties recorded a lot fewer overnight stays, several hundred or several dozen.

The DZS noted that the accuracy of this data largely depends on whether visitors are registered in the eVisitor system as well as on the findings of inspections. It did not say how many properties providing non-commercial accommodation there were in 2022.

According to the information from a recently held forum on family accommodation in tourism, there are about 300,000 holiday homes in Croatia, and slightly over 100,000 households are registered as commercial accommodation providers.
