Five percent more tourists visited Croatia in the first quarter of 2019 than at the same time last year, while the number of bed nights was roughly the same, National Tourist Board (HTZ) director Kristjan Stanicic said at a meeting of the Tourist Business Council at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday.

"Given that last year Easter fell earlier than this year, already in the first quarter, we see the increase in arrivals and the similar number of bed nights in the first three months of this year as a good and positive trend which, based on information from domestic and foreign partners, is expected to continue in June, while May could be slightly worse than last year. It will be interesting to see the results at the end of the first half of this year. ... In general, at the end of this year we expect a similar overall result as in 2018," Stanicic said.

Citing the latest data from the eVisitor tourist check-in and check-out information system, he said that about 945,000 tourists had visited Croatia in the first quarter of the year, up 5 percent on the same time last year, while the number of bed nights stayed the same as last year or 2.3 million. The largest number of tourist bed nights was recorded in Zagreb, followed by Dubrovnik, Rovinj, Opatija and Split. Stanicic said that this shows that tourists prefer destinations where hotels stay open all year round. (Hina)
