Tourism and Sport Minister Nikolina Brnjac officially launched the European Week of Sport and the related activities at a public event in Zagreb on Saturday. Croatia has been participating in this initiative launched by the European Commission in 2015 for nine years, and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport today turned Zagreb's Europe Square into a training ground with eight sport stations where citizens tested their physical fitness in contests with prominent Croatian athletes.

Brnjac said that the government had tripled investments in sport, increasing ten-fold allocations for local sports programmes, thus enabling 300,000 citizens to engage in sports.

She noted that under the amended law on sports, county sport associations would for the first time be co-financed from the state budget.

"This year we have secured three million euros for that purpose and that money is intended for professional work with and sports equipment for children and young people under 18," the minister said, among other things.

The main message of the European Week of Sport is "#BeActive" and it is aimed at encouraging citizens to be physically active throughout the year.

More than 140 events will be held across the country as part of the European Week of Sport.
