Commercial accommodation in July sees 2% fewer tourists and 0.5% more overnight stays

In July 2024, 4.4 million tourists stayed in commercial accommodation, which is 2% less than in July 2023, but they made 0.5% more overnight stays, totalling 25.2 million, of which 93.1% were overnight stays made by foreign tourists, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

Among all types of commercial accommodation, the most registered overnight stays, 57.1% of the total in July, or 14.4 million, were recorded in holiday resorts and short-term stay facilities, which is the same as in July last year.

These categories of accommodation also had the most available rooms, apartments, and campsite pitches, with 257,000 or 60.5% of the total of 424,000 rooms, apartments, and camping spots available in July this year. They also had the most permanent beds, with 686,000 or 61.5% of the total of 1.1 million beds in all commercial facilities.

In terms of overnight stays, campsites followed with six million in July 2024, which is a 0.6% increase compared to July 2023, while hotels and similar establishments ranked third with 4.8 million overnight stays, a 2.3% increase.

Fewer domestic tourists than foreigners, but increases noted

Although foreign tourists dominated in commercial accommodation, domestic tourists showed increases of 7.2% in arrivals compared to last July, with 377,000 arrivals, and an 8% increase in overnight stays, reaching 1.7 million.

Foreign tourists in July numbered four million, nearly 3% fewer than last year, but they maintained last year’s level of 23.4 million overnight stays.

German tourists recorded the most overnight stays among foreigners, with 4.6 million, although this was a 4.2% decrease from last year. They were followed by tourists from Slovenia, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Italy. There were fewer overnight stays by visitors from Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia compared to last July, while other countries saw increases.

First seven months show growth

The DZS data also shows that the first seven months of 2024 ended with increases for commercial accommodation, with 11.3 million tourists, a 4% increase from the same period in 2023, and nearly 50 million overnight stays, or 2% more.

Broken down by county, 30.6% of the total overnight stays in the first seven months were recorded in Istria, followed by Split-Dalmatia with a 19.2% share or 9.6 million overnight stays, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County with 8.1 million overnight stays, or a 16.2% share.
