1.52 m unemployed at end January, unemployment rate 8.4%

At the end of January, there were 1.52 million employed persons in Croatia, which is a drop of 1.4% or 21,123 fewer employed than at the end of December, and the registered unemployment rate was 8.4%, 0.5 percentage points up from December, shows data from the national statistical office (DZS).

Compared to January 2019, the number of employed persons was 2.3% higher.

At the end of January, 1.3 million people were employed in legal entities, which is a 1.4% drop or 18,089 fewer employed than in December and 2.4% more employed than in January 2019.

The number of workers grew the most on the month in the health care and social welfare sectors, to 100,800, an increase of 2.8%, and it dropped the most in the hospitality industry and tourism, to 71,949, a decrease of 12.2%.

On the year, the number of employed persons grew the most in the construction sector, by 9.7%, and it dropped the most in the manufacturing industry, by 0.9%.

According to data from the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), a total of 139,924 people were registered with the HZZ at the end of January, which is 6.2% more than in December and 11.9% less than in January 2019.
