European Week of Sport opens in Zagreb

The European Week of Sport opened in Zagreb on Monday for the tenth year in a row, with a wide range of activities held under the motto #BeActive.

The event was opened by Tourism and Sport Minister Tonči Glavina, who highlighted the importance of this initiative that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle.

In the last nine years, nearly 300,000 citizens have been engaged in various sports activities. Last year alone, about 155 events were organised, involving over 45,000 people, the minister said.

"Physical activity has a great positive impact on increasing the quality of life, which is especially important for children and young people, because physical activity has a positive impact on their physical, psychological and social development. That's why it is very important that they acquire the habit of engaging in physical activity at an early age in order to keep it for the rest of their lives," Glavina said.

The opening ceremony was attended, among others, by the Parliament Speaker's representative Maksimilijan Šimrak, Deputy Mayor of Zagreb Luka Korlaet, head of the European Commission Representation Zrinka Ujević, members of the European Parliament Nikolina Brnjac, Davor Ivo Stier and Karlo Ressler, and Health Ministry state secretary Marija Bubaš. Also present were Croatian athletes and para-athletes.

The European Week of Sport lasts until 30 September, and those interested are invited to participate in numerous sports events throughout Croatia. The event is organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport in cooperation with the Croatian Olympic Committee and Paralympic Committee. This European initiative, launched by the European Commission, takes place simultaneously in 40 countries with the aim of encouraging people to engage in sports and physical activity.
