Croatian minister attends Education, Youth, Culture & Sport Council meeting

Croatia's Minister of Tourism and Sports Nikolina Brnjac attended a meeting of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council held as part of the Slovenian presidency of the EU Council in Brussels on Tuesday.

Two documents were adopted at the meeting -- the Resolution on the Key Features of the European Model of Sport and the Conclusions on Lifelong Physical Activity. Also discussed was the dual career of athletes.

"Both documents adopted by the Council today are extremely important for the sports system. The resolution on the key features of the European sports model protects the main features of sport, such as freedom of association, pyramid structure, and open promotion and relegation systems, all in accordance with our Sports Act. In the Conclusions on Lifelong Physical Activity, the importance of engaging in physical activity was especially emphasised, given the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Brnjac.

In the discussion on the dual career of athletes, Brnjac emphasised the importance of early recognition of this challenge for every top athlete, pointing out Croatian examples of good practice.

"The Ministry of Tourism and Sports annually implements several dual career program measures such as state awards for top sports achievements, permanent monthly cash allowances, encouraging top athletes to acquire professional qualifications, and accommodation in student dormitories for athletes. The Ministry annually subsidises the education of about 150 athletes, worth more than one million kuna." said Brnjac.

As part of the meeting, Minister Brnjac, in the presence of Commissioner Maria Gabriel, signed a document entitled "Towards a Healthy and Active Croatia", by which Croatia joined the European Commission's new initiative to promote health-oriented physical exercise HealthyLifestyle4all, thus helping raise awareness of the importance of all generations engaging in physical activity.
