Cavtat nominated for European Best Destination 2019

The southern Croatian coastal town of Cavtat has been nominated for the title of Europe's best destination in 2019, according to the European Best Destinations website, the Konavle municipal tourist board has said. Voting for the favourite European destination is taking place from January 15 to February 5. Nominees include Paris, London and Rome. Alongside the European Best Destination 2019 nomination, the website has ranked Cavtat among the best romantic destinations and the best destinations for nature lovers in Europe.

The European Best Destination title has been awarded since 2009 by the Brussels-based European Best Destinations organisation, which was developed to promote culture and tourism in Europe. In partnership with the participating tourism offices and the EDEN Network, the organisation promotes a better understanding of the wealth, diversity and quality of European destinations.

The European Best Destinations website has voted Zagreb the best Christmas destination for three years in a row, and Zadar European Best Destination 2016. (Hina/FaH)

Project to build pedestrian suspension bridge over Krka river canyon unveiled

ZAGREB, Jan 20 (Hina) - A project to build a pedestrian suspension bridge over the canyon of the Krka river was unveiled in the central Adriatic city of Sibenik earlier this week.

The project was presented by Krka National Park director Kresimir Sakic and project designer Hrvoje Vukic.

The 462-metre Tibetan-style footbridge will be the third longest in the world and the second longest in Europe. It will connect the medieval fortresses Necven and Trosenj and provide a direct experience of the landscape and intact nature.

Vukic said that it would be a glass-bottomed walkway suspended 140 metres above the river.

"This is the crown of our development projects and visitor infrastructure ... It will provide renewed momentum for future development of this area and will add to its attraction without endangering nature," Sakic said.

Local government officials said that this project would mean a lot for the development of their municipalities, especially the tourist industry.

Construction is expected to start within the next two years, depending on the speed of preparation of the necessary documents and licences. (Hina/FaH)
