Progressive recovery of nights spent in hotels through 2010, Croatia above EU average

In 2010, 1.6 billion nights were spent in hotels and similar establishments in the EU27, an increase of 2.8% compared with 2009, after two successive annual declines of 0.3% in 2008 and 3.7% in 2009. These estimates, which include nights spent whether for business or leisure, come from a publication from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the same period, the number of nights spent in hotels in Croatia went up 4%, according to figures which Eurostat released on Monday. In the EU27, the number of hotel nights spent by residents in their own country rose by 1.1% and hotel nights spent by non-residents grew by 5.1% in 2010. In 2010, the number of nights spent in hotels and similar establishments in Croatia was 19.3 million, of which 17 million was generated by foreign guests and 2.3 million by Croatian residents. The number of overnights generated by foreigners went up 5.8%, while the number of overnights realised by Croatians dropped by 7.6% compared with 2009. According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, Croatia recorded a total of 56.4 million overnight stays in all types of accommodation, including camps and commercial private accommodation.
